Curse of Strahd intro – Running the Death House

The GUIDE index for Curse of Strahd and other related articles can be found here ! Running the Death House The main Curse of Strahd module encompasses levels 3-10. If you already have level 3 players you can jump right into the action of Barovia’s NPC encounters. However if you wish to start from level 1, the attached dungeon crawl Death House is a great tool to level the party up, set the tone of the campaign and introduce a few clues and facts found in the house. After using one of the adventure hooks (page 18), you have successfully steered the party to Barovia. The mists will dictate the places the party can visit. They will close up on them leading them to the Village of Barovia. When they enter the village, the adventurers find out that they can’t find anyone or access any location because of the mists,…

Map 74 – Treasure Island

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! This is drawn as a local cartographer would create a map. I think this is great to show to players. A great opportunity for a treasure hunt adventure. Gather your belongings and let’s sail to this uncharted island. Word says valuable treasure is hidden under the mountain ruins. Beware the pirate who camp on the northern side of the island. And pray you not stumble upon the savage jungle tribe. There’s a version with and without the grid. Also a B/W printer friendly available for supporters at Patreon. Supporting indie artists in the RPG community like me, helps make the available content better. Curse of Strahd – Guide – Introduction

The GUIDE index for Curse of Strahd and other related articles can be found here ! Foreword Ravenloft was originally published by TSR in 1983. It was released as a stand alone booklet for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. Written by Tracy and Laura Hickman, it was released as a stand alone booklet for Advanced Dungeons and DragonsIt and a success back then. The result was that it got remade and readapted to different forms. There’s a campaign setting of the same name, lots of small adventure modules. In 2006 WotC released Expedition to Castle Ravenloft which is a small campaign with the castle and some added material from the setting for 3.5th edition. There is also the board game released in 2010, Castle Ravenloft. And the reason I’m writing this and you’re reading this is 2016 Curse of Strahd, an adaptation to the original module released by WotC for 5th…

Map 72 – Hidden Lair

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! Here’s an underground mage’s hideout accessible via a hidden entrance in a cave or a teleportation circle in the mage’s private quarters. I am creating new great things with image layout and decorations. I hope people are liking my developing style. I like to make illustrations that have a magic to themselves.  I decided to write something different this time, and separate the general steps I take when creating an illustration like this one.   First thing is to lay down the general areas and line art. You can see I only drew the walls, doors and started adding some dirt details and rocks.                   Step 2 – Add furniture and dirt. You have to take scale into account when drawing furniture. In this scale it’s 5ft. per square.  …

Map 71 – Sunken Ship

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! Three weeks ago a small cog ship transporting valuable metal goods sailed from an important port town up north. It was supposed to arrive to this city almost 15 days ago. As the admiral, the nobles and regular townsfolk are looking up to me to offer an explanation or a solution. Sir Lanter Godbrey is particularly upset with this situation. We had a conversation yesterday right here and his voice could be heard all the way down to the docks. I can understand him at least, once a year his family transports extremely valuable cargo, mostly gold, silk and spice. If this ship is really lost, Godbrey’s state will face a severe deficit. The adjoined families will all blame Sir Lanter, and he will blame me. Bad standing with such a powerful last name will sink my reputation,…

Map 70 – The Blood Pyramid

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! First map of April sets the bar really high for anything I do after this.  This is a four level pyramid, it’s a March Patreon reward for Golden Compass patron, Kwane Ricks. It’s a Yuan-ti pyramid, however, it can easily be repurposed. The style is aztec inspired. At the very top, there is a sacrificial altar. Humanoids are routinely sacrificed by the yuan-ti priests here. The sacrificial stone has canals for the blood to flow to the center, there it falls through a central shaft that goes all the way down to the floor level of the pyramid. The blood falls on a magical stone slab while the priest performs a ritual from the top, if successful, he conjures whatever horror from the underworld you want. Maybe a yuan-ti anathema or a demon. I believe that the place…

Map 68 – Fenced Camp

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! This addition is an outdoors camp surrounded by a small fence or palisade. Useful for adventurers finding refuge during a long road, only to be attacked while resting the night. Or alternatively, this could be a bandit’s camp that the adventurers need to infiltrate or directly attack. Map 67 – Mushroom Circles

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! There are myths and legends about fey and faeries traveling far distances in a magical way. Tales talk about faeries walking among overgrowths and fungi patches, and then, when no one is watching, they suddenly disappear. Their vague silhouettes against the moonlight vanish, in an instant they are gone. Common folk believe this ability is innate to fairies but there is nothing farther from the truth. There is a magical form of traveling that is only accessible to those with the forgotten lore of the myconid lords. A powerful magic that comes in the form of power words, ancient incantations that resonate with the very energy of fungi life. All forms of fungi are interconnected in a web of strands that cannot be seen in the material world. These connections are like shortcuts that exist throughout the feywild…
