Map 91 – Dwarven Vault

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! Get the FREE PDF of this map here !   This is a short adventure that can be adapted or modified to fit your setting or current level of play. It’s about a dwarven vault which is hiding something valuable to a group adventurers. It could be just money and wealth, maybe it is a magic item, a forgotten scroll, a family heirloom. Whatever it is, it is very important. Inside this underground complex, there is a vault in the middle of a circular construction (see the map). This is the regular vault, it is heavily protected. Its door is built from sturdy metal alloys but the real protection is its lock. Built by master dwarfs and gnome tinkerers. The lock uses a series of slides, buttons and levers; when used in the correct combination, the vault door…

Chapter 10 – The Ruins of Berez

The GUIDE index for Curse of Strahd and other related articles can be found here ! It is not specified in a timeline, but some time ago, probably a century or more, there was a fourth settlement in the Valley of Barovia. This was the town of Berez. The Burgomaster’s name was Lazlo Ulrich (weird uh? I was expecting Berezovich, following the name conventions of Barovia). Not much is said about the town and its people. Berez is located right on the Luna River shore, in a place that became a swamp due to Strahd’s anger, around 4.5 miles south of lake Zarovich. Berez became a place of importance for Strahd Von Zarovich when he became aware that an incarnation of Tatyana Federovna lived there. The peasant girl was named Marina; her countenance and personality reminded Strahd of Tatyana. He lured her and feasted on her blood one night. His…

Map 90 – Gallery of Eons

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! Recently, the city library unearthed a secret passage in one of the basements. It went down into the city underground. A group of scholars followed these tunnels until they found an entrance built in stone. The runes and inscriptions in the stone spelled ancient names in a forgotten elven dialect. A language not often seen and rarely spoken anymore. Marth is an adventurer who studies magic. He was part of the original surveyor team and helped translate the runes as best as he could. The chief of the exploring team decided not to continue exploring further, he deemed it too dangerous. They returned to the city and reported their findings to the city council. Who expects a council session to decide what to do and who to send to finish the exploration. Marth would not wait. This was…

Chapter 9 – Tsolenka Pass

The GUIDE index for Curse of Strahd and other related articles can be found here ! Waiting in the southernmost part of the Valley of Barovia is a mountain range. There is a serpentine dangerous path that meanders through the mountains, this is the Tsolenka Pass. The place is dangerous in and by itself because of the crude weather, it is so cold that exploration without proper clothes will be impossible. The adventurers will not come this far south without a clear reason to do so. There are only two reasons why the PCs would go down this way: They know or suspect the location of the Amber Temple and are looking for it. They come in search of a magic relic and suspect that it is located in the Tsolenka guard tower. This place is highly dangerous for low-ish level parties. If the PCs are looking for the Amber…

Map 89 – Undiscovered Cave

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! Prospect Denizens of the Tower !! I bring you a cave map. It is a generic mini dungeon crawl appropriate for any kind of natural monster and some other oddities. It would also work as lair for things like goblins, orcs, yuan-ti or similar. It’s optimized for use in Roll20. It’s a 15×15 image (dpi 72). I have attached several versions. There’s with and without grid, in case you want to readjust. And also a printer friendly version as always (this is for Patreon supporters). This follows my current objective of producing roll20 compatible material. Soon I’ll start working on a modular dungeon pack. Although i’m still getting around to deciding how exactly I can do that.

Traveling in Barovia – Extra Encounters

The GUIDE index for Curse of Strahd and other related articles can be found here ! The Valley of Barovia is a secluded place. A part of the world that was torn apart and set inside small demiplane when Strahd Von Zarovich killed his brother Sergei, thus sealing the blood pact with the Dark Powers. With Strahd’s permission a person can enter or exit Barovia. As you know, the borders of the valley are marked by a thick mist that no one can cross to exit, unless Strahd wills it. He cannot leave either, that’s his curse. The only ones who can travel in or out of Barovia are the Vistani, since Strahd owes them that liberty due to a centuries old pact. Though Strahd is evil and apparently has no care for his subjects. He is still the lord of the land. If he was an evil psycho everyone…

Chapter 8 – Village of Krezk

The GUIDE index for Curse of Strahd and other related articles can be found here ! The Village of Krezk is the third settlement in the Valley of Barovia. It is located in the westernmost part of the valley, really close to the mist wall. Krezk is a secluded place, the people that live here seldom go beyond the walls. It’s the only settlement in the valley with a stone wall and a proper gatehouse. The place is defensible, except that they do not have enough men to guard the place effectively. It is still better than having no protection (Village of Barovia) or a palisade (Town of Vallaki). Krezk has most of what it needs inside the walls. There are trees, a water source, they raise chickens, hares and pigs, and there are also small crop gardens for beets and turnips. Krezk is self-sufficient except for wine. Which is…

Map 88 – Aboleth’s Lair

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! Aboleths are formidable foes. Humanoids, unaware of the lore behind the depth monsters mistake them for simple fish. Enormous but fish nonetheless. Only the very well read would know that aboleths are long-lived psychic masterminds whose plots and plans can span millennia, not because they can live that long, they can’t. It is because their superior brains contain all memories and past experiences of their parents , grandparents and all the way back to unknown ancestors. An aboleth can come up with a plot so long and ambitious that only its offspring would be able to carry it out. And they would, by sharing all memories and experiences from the parent. Gurynthx is an aboleth that took over a gnome underground laboratory. With the help of his slime slaves and other thralls they created a series of tunnels…

Map 87 – Abandoned Mine

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! I tell you that place was not a good place to dig and mine. Duke Fordant came into his current position a few years ago, a fair ruler but lacking experience. The worst problem of his was that he didn’t have first person experience of the terrible things in the world. May Lathander, Chauntea or whatever god he believes in protect him from a real war. Everybody knows there was value in the nearby mountains but even we the dwarves did not bother to mine them. Of course I said yes when they offered me to conduct the mining operation. A few other dwarven brothers were part of the main miner’s force too. I could see it in their eyes, and I felt it myself. We dwarves have a special sensitivity for rock formations, underground tunnels and rocky…
