Out of the Abyss – Chapter 16 – The City of Spiders

The GUIDE index is here ! Chapter 16 in the book is the fetid wedding, but, if you’ve been following my guide, you know I switched the order of those two chapters. In my opinion it makes more sense to do it like this, but if you disagree, the chapter order in the book, works alright too. After acquiring all the different ingredients and components to build the Dark Heart, Vizeran needs several days to build it. It is during this downtime that the PCs have to decide how they are going to go about slipping inside Menzoberranzan. Objective Their mission is to infiltrate the city, enter Sorcere (the spellcaster’s tower), get access to Gromph’s office and Inner Sanctum, obtain Gromph’s Grimoire, leave the Dark Heart, and finally get out. I will add an extra objective. The city is protected against teleportation magic since Demogorgon appeared. After retrieving the Grimoire,…

Map 46 – Cursed Crypt

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! Inside the most attended temple in the city, there is a crypt where long forgotten rulers are buried. The construction is of such architectural beauty, that often nobles, important people and foreign dignitaries are invited to visit and pay respect to the rulers of past ages. The most important person buried in the crypt is Lord Pennsyl Ducardi, known to have been a king centuries ago. His sarcophagus had never been opened out of respect for the dead. One week ago an unsuspecting visitor forced open the sarcophagus’ seal. Lord Ducardi instantly reanimated as a mummy. A necromantic aura in the crypt was activated, and all the other sarcophagi opened and released undead creatures. The group of ten visitors was slain and turned into undead abominations. Map 45 – Gnome Outpost

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! Gnomes are often disregarded as weak, due to their size or culture. But nothing is farther from the truth. Their most deadly weapon is their cunning. It is with intelligence that they can turn the tide of a battle. To protect their most important settlements in lands that are roamed by savage races like orcs, gnolls or goblins, gnomes build militarized outposts. The troops in these protective settlements is to stop invading parties of unwelcome creatures. You can use this outpost in two different ways. The PCs can attack it, along with a platoon of soldiers or the like. Or the PCs can help defend the outpost against an assaulting party. I find the second option the most fun. You can arrange an attack that comes in waves, and little by little the PCs and then gnomes double…

Map 44 – The Throne Room

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! WOAH ! What happened to map 43 ?  Some maps are only released as Patreon exclusive content. If you like my maps and would like to have access to all my creations. Consider joining our boat, sponsoring me. You will get access to all the material in Hi-Def version. Elven Tower presents an awesome throne room with a super security configuration; the only way to access it is through a teleporting crystal. The other end of the teleportation device is in a part of the castle or stronghold that is more easily defendible than the throne room itself. This throne room is a great way to portray an overly cautious king, a vampire overlord, a demon lord or a lich king. By the way, this throne room is compatible with my Map 43 – Fortress of Sorrow, it’s a…

Map 42 – The Arcanist’s Lair

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! Kobolds are often underestimated and dismissed as mischievous, weak and bothersome creatures. This assumption is often true, but once in a while a kobold discovers a sliver of magic in its draconic heritage and develops magical abilities. Turdink (Mage) is such a kobold, over 7 years he has amassed some treasure and a small cult of other kobolds who revere him and consider him a messenger of the draconic gods. Turdink is smart enough to know that he’s not sacred or anything, he’s conscious of his magic power and the influence it has on others of his kind, and takes full advantage of it. He and his clan have built a lair over the years to establish themselves. The complex itself is very defensive; assaulting it unprepared has been the doom of many adventurers. Kobolds might not be strong but they are numerous and…

Map 41 – Illithid’s Slave Pit

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! How to use this: There are two ways to use the next adventure/scenario. The first one is planned, the PCs get into a dangerous situation and you arrange for them to be defeated and captured, to be later transported and imprisoned in the cells. The second one is a safeward for an unwanted TPK. The PCs are defeated and the circumstances can be arranged for them to be stabilized and sold to slavery. Even if defeated by savage creatures, once unconscious, anything can happen. Some opportunists could show up to scare away the dangerous creatures, stabilize the party and sell them to human traders. The Slave Pit The PCs wake up in individual cells, they were sold to Rhukals, an orc slave trainer who often participates in the Illithid’s slave pit. He is cruel and nasty, and doesn’t…
