Out of the abyss – Chapter 7 – Escape from the Underdark

The GUIDE index is here ! This chapter is about reaching the surface and having a final confrontation with priestess Illvara. It’s important to note that by this moment, months may have passed and it doesn’t sound plausible that priestess Illvara is still spending her time, men and resources to hunt a severely reduced (in number) group of prisoners. If you followed my advice in chapter 2, you have narrated cut-scenes for the players, so that they know that this drow party is still looking for them. They may have also run into Xalith in Gracklstugh, and most probably saw the remains of the drow scouts in Neverlight Grove. But why is this still going on? Illvara is a powerful and respected member of her house and even if her expeditionary force has doubts, they will obey her orders. And she is still hunting the PC’s because she has contracted…

Out of the Abyss – Chapter 6 – Blingdenstone

The GUIDE index is here ! Side-quests that end in Blingdenstone Let’s start by putting on the table the side-quests that require that the PC’s go the Blingdenstone: Werz Saltbaron (from Gracklstugh), commissioned the delivery of raw spell gems to Kazook Pickshine. He is an alchemist who can be found in Blingdenstone market, the trader’s grotto (page 103). He pays them with a zircon worth 50 gp. Pelek’s ghost (from the Whorlstone Tunnels) asked the PC’s to bring his remains (just his hand) to Blingdenstone. The hand can be delivered to Burrow Warden Jadger in the catacombs in The ruby in the rough (page 103). Blingdenstone When the party arrives to Blingdenstone they will be level 6, and way more prepared to deal with threats than they were before. Fortunately, unless they mess it up at the city’s entrance, they will be received warmly by the deep gnomes, even the…

Strahd’s determination

Following my Strahd encounter ideas series. I now present an idea that is easily usable after the PC’s have been having a conversation with Strahd, or even if they are fighting him and insulting him during the fight (I always encourage RPing during fights). Better yet if one of the characters has insulted or disrespected Strahd. Strahd is short tempered and not at all used to being insulted, but he will react calmly and respond with witty questions. When the PC’s attack him openly or Strahd decides it is the moment to act. He will move around the battlefield in a way that isolates the character who insulted him the most. He just needs to isolate him 10 feet to cast wall of force in the form of a hemispherical dome, trapping himself and the character inside it. Isolated from the rest of his enemies, Strahd is now free to…

Out of the Abyss – Chapter 5 – Neverlight Grove

The GUIDE index is here ! This chapter is pretty straightforward, the objective of going to Neverlight Grove is probably a priority for the party because most people will grow to love Stool. That is the main motivation to visit the Grove. But storywise, the objective of the chapter is to reveal that it isn’t just Demogorgon in the underdark. The revelation that Zuggtmoy is there should change the pace and vibe of the adventure. It opens the door to think that maybe there are more demon lords in the under dark (true fact btw). It should also encourage the PC’s to escape the underdark to alert their factions, allies, nobles and the like. Eldeth’s main objective if she’s still alive will be to get to Gauntlgrym to alert the king. If Sarith Kzekarith is with the party when they travel to Neverlight Grove. Remember to roleplay that he is always in favor…

The cruelty of Strahd

I will start writing things about The curse of Strahd soon. I’m currently running the campaign. Maybe I will write a guide, just like I’m doing with Out of the Abyss. One of the most important facts about this adventure is to understand that this is Strahd’s land and curse, everything orbits around him, the PC’s are but pawns in the adventure. And Strahd is a character both simple and profound  at the same time. A misunderstood soul who is ultimately perceived as just cruel and malignant. So here is a suggestion/tip of an encounter with Strahd. Whenever the PC’s are walking the streets of Vallaki, it doesn’t matter if this is before or after the sun festival, they will hear the approaching sound of hooves, horses galloping fast. They turn around to see the main street full of people running to get out of the way of Count Strahd’s…

Out of the Abyss guide – Chapter 4 – Gracklstugh

The GUIDE index is here ! Gracklstugh This is by far the worst chapter in the book, in terms of how badly written and organized it is. It is not clear, and all the things that go down in Gracklstugh are so many, and there are so many quests that it is easy to get lost in a  circle of possible options and missions that seem to go nowhere. This will be a long article so grab a cup of coffee or tea. Table of contents Getting to Gracklstugh General info of the city and duergar The plot Power figures of the city Plot flowchart and suggestions The Whorlstone Tunnels End and consequences Getting to Gracklstugh Getting to Gracklstugh is not particularly difficult, if PC’s follow along the Darklake borders they will find the city. There are two ways to get inside the city, the frontal approach through one of…

Out of the Abyss guide – Chapter 3 – The Darklake

The GUIDE index is here ! The Darklake This chapter is divided into two parts. The first one is about traveling through the lake (but this only happens until after Sloobludop) and the second part is about everything that is going to go down in the Kuo-Toa town Sloobludop. The first part about traveling through the lake is an option to get to the other Underdark settlements, or it can be used combined with just walking around it. It must be said and constantly reminded to the players that the “Darklake” is not really a lake, but a gigantic area of the underdark filled with lakes, some small and some kilometers wide, and an un-mappable network of underground rivers and grottos that connect all the lakes. Some of these lakes and rivers are completely submerged and are only accesible diving.   Now really, after Demogorgon’s number in Sloobludop, with his…

OneShot Stravaganza – The Con Man

This oneshot doesn’t have a appropriate level, it could vary from group to group.  It is easily scalable changing the number of mobs.  Also feel free to change the names if your game so needs it. The only prerequisite is that the PC’s are interested in acquiring a place to start a home-base. It can be anywhere really. They will also need access to a high sum of gold, at least 12,500gp. When the time is right and they need a home-base, There are two options: They start seeking out info about it and find the scribes’ office of Sir Robert d’Avery. The PC’s receive an invitation from Sir Robert d’Avery to meet him and talk business. The office is in a nice part of the city, a pretty facade. Inside they will find Sir Robert d’Avery (the con man) and his scribe and assistant Mara Tollonks. These people are scammers, what…

Homemade Beholder !!!

For our recent Out of the Abyss campaign I made this Beholder to represent Karazikar. The center is a styrofoam sphere, I covered it with molding clay and after that I gave the finished touches with acrylic paint.  The eye stalks were made with cut matches.  At the end we were really satisfied with how it looked.
