Can I repeat my save?

Last Sunday we were playing an Out of the abyss campaign. The PC’s are about to finish the campaign, they are level 14 and pretty maxed-out. During the rage of demons, prior to the fight with Demogorgon, they fought a Balor. My players are somewhat new to the game, except for one of them. They were scared because of the picture but knew little else about the monster’s abilities. During all this battle sequence there had been several occasions in which an explosion caused debris to fall on them, forcing a DEX save to avoid half the damage. It was very little damage (3d6), it served more for the ambient and general tone and setting. It was an immersion touch. Back to the battle, at the end of it, two players were inside the death-throes range of the Balor when it was killed, but they did not know about this.…

Out of the abyss — The tragedy of Derendil

The Out of the Abyss GUIDE index is here ! Derendil the Quaggoth, easy to angry but noble at heart. In my story the other players like Derendil a lot, he’s become an important part of the team, it started because at first he had so much more HP that the rest of them so he was a great element in battle. But the story of the elf prince trapped in the monster body was appealing to the rest of the guys. When they reached Blingdenstone, they had a access to a greater restoration spell which didn’t do anything. I had some backstory for Derendil too. He was always mentioning things about his past. He mentioned his younger brother, his sister who was a great mage and his father the king. Nelrindenvane, his kingdom. He was always describing this place and its typical food and everything. He said that as…

Out of the abyss — Maze Engine

The GUIDE index is here ! and out Patreon funding is here ! One puzzling option in the maze engine sequence is the option for destroying all magic items. I thought this options was way too harsh and did not really add to the story. I came up with an alternative which brought the adventure to high new levels. The team just finished the Maze Engine and banished Baphomet, they had already banished Yennoghu in combat. Unfortunately during the Maze sequence, all their magic objects, scrolls included were absorbed through a vortex. The Tridrone told them that they were brought to Mechanus. They didn’t have their Teleportation Helm but the halfling cleric could use Word of Recall to get them back to Hilltoppple, a small settlement that they created just outside Gravenhollow. There was no way for them to planeshift so they contacted Vizeran through Sending, and told them in 25 words that…

First Elven Tower post.

I guess that one day I’ll look back to this moment and remember how I started this website. This might be the most unseen part of the page, as this post is being written with the website still offline and incomplete. Nevertheless I enjoy forming part of the origins of this project. I am a D&D and GURPS DM, and I love my craft. Storytelling comes naturally to me, and my players love being a part of the worlds and stories that we build together. At this moment we’re about to finish the Out of the Abyss, camping arch. I will be writing a series of guides and tips for all the parts of the adventure as well as some chronicles of the best parts. With another group we are in the middle of the Curse of Strahd. I will probably write some stuff about it but I am still…
