Out of the Abyss – Extra encounters No. 2

Make sure you visit my Guide to Out of the Abyss. Although teleportation is an option, if you’re following my advice on chapter 9, the second part of the adventure from level 8 through 15 still involves lots of traveling and wilderness encounters. Unfortunately, the book is not very clear in the options available. And when you find what’s available, it’s surprising how “not cool” the experience is. In chapter 9 the book tells us to use the encounter tables in chapter 2. You know where I’m going. Those battle are way to easy for a level 8+ party. Then we find another encounter table in the Wormwrithings chapter, a little better but it’s not enough, and then you have to use it again in the labyrinth. After that there is an encounter table to be used in the fetid wedding, while traversing Araumycos, that’s the worst one. The purpose…

Originally it was used for their guild, but after so many years, now the kingdom has claimed them and uses them as a flying fortress. Only the best soldiers are assigned to the Skyward Patrol. It requires the best fighters and most disciplined people. This fantastic location can serve as a mission-giving central hub for low-medium level…

Elven Tower wishes you Merry Christmas !

It’s been almost 4 months since I started writing this website. When I did, I had no idea what I was getting into. I really didn’t have a clue about the content I would create later on. There was only one thing that I knew back then, and it was that after 16 years of playing RPG games; I wanted to give something back. I decided that I would start a website with the sole purpose of creating my own content for RPGs. Sharing my experience and creativity with fellow players and GMs.  I had little hope for a big audience, who’s going to want to read this, anyway? But I was surprised, week after week of seeing my website stats. I had trouble believing that so many people were visiting and reading my posts. I am an indie artist and do everything myself, I manage the website and patreon, write…

Map 38 – Infested Sewers

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! Most peasants and common folk go about their businesses in the big cities, ignoring what happens below the surface. A metropolis would not work if its sewage system did not get rid of water disposal. Depending on the city, a faulty sewage system could cause nasty floods in certain areas of the city, spreading disease and discomfort among the populace. In the recent weeks, Hightown Sheriff Robb d’Avery has received reports of malfunctions in the sewers, a flood in a common folk neighborhood, and most recently, rumor of fish monsters emerging at night from sewage accesses. He was reluctant to believe such nonsense about monsters, but he is well informed to know that sewage needs maintenance from time to time. Since his period in the position, such labor had not been performed. His response was to commission a…

Map 37 – Forest Lodge

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! Not very deep in the forest, the elf Darimir Zunth lives in a wooden lodge that looks very ordinary. He hides a secret, a few years back, while exploring a nearby cave, he found a necklace. It has a big ruby embedded, which shines brilliantly. It is cursed, and little by little has transformed Darimir into a very different being. Now he is deranged, he lives in solitude, never abandoning the forest anymore. He fears outsiders or anyone who passes near his territory. The magic of the necklace permits him communicate with wild animals, through years, he has somehow bonded with a pack of wolves that inhabit the forest. Darimir is insane and cannot be reasoned with, if captured, he can only insult and curse the PCs. If visitors stumble upon his house, he uses the wolves pack, or his skills…

Map 36 – Old Dwarven Mine

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! Dwarves are known for their unstoppable greed. It’s a curse that follows their entire culture since eons back. It affects more commonly the dwarves who still live mostly underground. Their thirst for digging deeper and deeper to uncover the secrets and treasures in the stones. Due to this behavior, they are also experts in keeping what they have found safe. This is a cave that ages back, was mined by a dwarf clan, Clan Torchbeak. Because of clan conflicts back in their mountain ranges, they had to go and never came back to this place. They left some trinkets and tools all over the place, but nothing really of value; except what they hid in their treasure room. There are to accesses to this mine, the old elevator winch that can be found inside a cave, the PCs…

Map 35 – Underground Lakehold

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! Dwarves often build their holds near underground streams for convenience. Continuous supply of water and fish are difficult to come by in the inhospitable underground ecosystem. Although this particular dwarven community looks normal, there is a deep secret . Yanoggethu, an aboleth, a deep lord, regularly surfaces from the central whirlpool. The first times he appeared, the dwarves tried to fight him, but eventually, all of them succumbed to Yanoggethu’s mind control. All of them are thralls of this aboleth; although it’s difficult to tell the difference. The PCs might find this hold when traveling underground in a big cave complex, or if they are traversing the underdark. Whatever the reason, when they find the settlement, dwarf scouts invite them to meet Jarl Dormunf, who was the clan leader, now he’s just a puppet. The dwarves aren’t the only…

Out of the Abyss – Chapter 15 – The Fetid Wedding

The GUIDE index is here ! Alright, Chapter 15 in the book is actually The City of Spiders. But as I mentioned previously in this guide, it doesn’t make much sense to visit Menzoberranzan, then get out to crash the fetid wedding, only to come back again to Menzoberranzan to place the dark heart (if that is the PCs decision). But of course you are welcome to do it as ordered in the book. This is just my personal informed suggestion for the order of chapters; I feel it correctly conveys the dramatic rise of wildness and danger of the demon lords. This is actually a very short chapter, and hastily written as much of the second part of the adventure. If you play it as is, you’ll find that a level 13-14 party is going to walk through it unscathed; at those levels, adventurers are almost super heroes. It’s…

Map 34 – River Crossing

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! Ugg and Terret are two ogres who live under this bridge. Usually they ignore the townsfolk who tend to pass through the day, as they know that people usually flee or attack them on sight. They live off the game in the forest and scavenging whatever they can find. Everything changed recently when a small band of goblins came and talked the ogres into charging a “fee” for crossing the river. The ogres have little understanding of the mechanics, but the goblin leader Trinkell has given them a script to tell travelers and merchants. The ogres are to tell people that the winter is soon upon them, and as such, they have decided that instead of attacking and pillaging, they can just take some stuff and avoid confrontations all together. It has worked, most of the time; the…

Map 33 – Yuan-ti Temple

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT OUR MAP INDEX AND OUR PATREON FUNDING PAGE ! Yuan-ti priests are often revered like gods by their fellow inferior cultists. The greatest of them are buried in magnificent underground complexes where they, and the serpent gods can be worshipped. This is one of those tomb-temples. Only this was abandoned and forgotten long ago. In the past year, Morrok, an orc chieftain, found the underground complex and claimed it as his own. The orcs have plundered most of the temple and now use it as their home. The only place still unexplored are the tombs below. The orcs tried to clear them but the undead guards are too strong. Fortunately they discovered that the guards do not pursue them outside the tombs. Since then, Morrok and his orcs just avoid that area. The influence of the serpent idols in the main chamber has given Morrok some strange…
